Sfumato

Hamburg, Germany.

2023

Montblanc’s Creative Director Marco Tomasetta reached out to us with an exciting brief—create an animation piece announcing the launch of a new leather collection: the Montblanc Meisterstück Sfumato Capsule.

Developed by Leonardo DaVinci and used widely among Renaissance painters, sfumato is a painting technique to fade the transition between colors. It plays with the subtle nuances of light and color to soften the outline of figures in paintings. Montblanc’s sfumato-inspired pieces also draw inspiration from the Maison’s writing heritage, with the dark tone representing the ink of a fountain pen.

Immersed in the enchanting world of Renaissance paintings, our vision was to create a masterpiece of visual poetry. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive style's meticulous framing, subtle colors, and masterful use of light, we sought to weave together a creation that captures the essence of this timeless artistic era.
